Price and Time - Radiocarbon Dating

Standard AMS 14C dating service is for samples yielding at least 0.5 mg of carbon after chemical pretreatment (often acid-alkali-acid treatment of organic material). The precision of radiocarbon dates for recent samples (younger than 2000 years) is better than  0.4% which equals +/-35 years for the 1-σ statistical uncertainty of the measured age. The uncertainty changes according to the age of the sample and will be larger for older material. Consultation with the Leibniz-Laboratory about the samples prior to submission is advised.

Prices don’t include VAT (value-added tax). Customers from the EU excluding Germany should provide a VAT-number to avoid paying the 19% German tax.

Standard Service (+/-35 years for recent samples) 3 - 5 months € 350
Higher precision (+/- 25 years for recent samples, duplicate measurement) € 450
Dating of sample and extracted humic acid (recommended for sediments)
€ 500

Additional fees for the following pretreatments:

Collagen extraction from bones incl. determination of collagen content € 50
Cellulose extraction € 50
Pretreatment of samples with carbon content of 0.1% or less € 80
solvent extraction € 35

Discounts for already pretreated samples:

Purified pollen* € 50
Pure CO2** € 75
Graphite** € 170

* Sample and sample pretreatment should be documented, if possible a picture should show the quality of the prepared sample.

** To establish the quality of the sample preparation outside our laboratory these samples should be accompanied by

• at least two background samples

• one or two standard samples (e.g. IAEA C2, C3, or C5-C8).

These samples have to be prepared in the same laboratory in substantially the same way as the unknown samples and will be charged as regular samples.

Cancellation fees are applied when a sample is processed that yields no measurable amount of carbon:

Standard pretreatment and combustion € 50
Collagen extraction € 50
